One of the main worries of the Chinese megacities is the insufficient resource to feed the growing population. Local measurements range from protecting basic cultivated land to encouraging higher productive local agriculture projects, not only to ensure enough local food but also to simplify the circulation process and shorten the distance for food transportation.

As opposite to the big cities’ problems of shortage of resources for the growing population, the rural areas, where the migrants come from, encounter the opposite problems of shortage of work power for farming works. This generates abandoned farmlands and a series of connected social issues, such as unhealthy mental condition of left-behind children. On the other hand, their parents, facing soaring house price and high-level education required in the city, suffer as well the risk of unemployment in their new life. In some cases they become so-called “instability factors” in urban society.

Food becomes a driving force of planning for abundance. In these projects, NAUTA (together with partner office SADI in the Shenzhen Bao’an case) investigates two complementary ways of approaching this problem; Bottom up intervention in Beijing vs. holistic planning in Shenzhen.

在这些项目里,NAUTA(和SADI深圳市建筑设计研究总院城市设计研究所一起合作了在深圳宝安的项目)用两种互补的方法去面对这个问题.在北京自下而上的介质和深圳的整体规划

CONSTRUCTION HOUSE BAEXEM

The construction of the extension of the house in Baexem is progressing rapidly. Four weeks ago, the contractor started with the digging of the foundations. Last week, the concrete roof of the extension was poured. The steel beams forming the main construction of the covered terrace are  hoisted in place. After the secundary – wooden beam – structure of the roof is finished, the roof will be made watertight. Then, isolating and rendering the facade is the next job according to the planning. In March, the window frames will complete the exterior of the extension. When the exterior is closed, the connection between the extension and the existing house will be made.

Delivery is scheduled for the end of April.

HOUSING FOR JERUSALEM EAST

Following a pre-selection process, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in occupied Palestinian territory selected NAUTA for the development of housing and public space design solutions for Palestinian communities in East Jerusalem. We are honored to contribute with our work to the development of such a complex urban condition. We hope that with our expertise and passion for the profession we’ll give a small contribution to improve the lifestyle of Palestinians in the city and open new chances for their social interaction.

The project will include workshops of participated design in which we will interact with local inhabitants and help them absorb the principles of the masterplan for its sustainable and organic implementation.

NAUTA FINALIST IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

We are proud to announce that, after a pre-selection among 72 international and local applicants, NAUTA has been selected finalist for the International consultation on the Urban Design of Bao’an West Dynamic Coastal Zone in Shenzhen, China.

This project consists of a plan for the Shenzhen coast towards the Pearl river Delta, the only waterfront left in Shenzhen for requalification, pivot for the entire Pearl River Delta region. The project area consists of 45km coastline with a total 1600ha, including harbor areas, two existing villages and a brand new town that will host 3.5 million inhabitants.

At the end of July NAUTA has presented its strategy to the local Bao’an government. Particular attention was given to NAUTA’s strategy of focusing the whole project on landscape interventions that would solve the massive water pollution that affects the 33 tributary rivers, as well as the Pearl River. NAUTA’s strategy combines a short term intervention based on the intensification of the local mangrove forests, local protected landscape heritage, in order to maximize the water filtering, as well as a long term hydraulic intervention that could eliminate the causes of water pollution for good.

Our ‘Productive Landscape’ becomes the application of our latest research principles that try to design nature and city maximizing their productivity. The Chinese national 2015 plan is stressing the problem of the dramatic decrease of arable land in the country, vs. an unstoppable population growth in the urban areas.
