MAURIZIO SCARCIGLIA RUNS ‘FUR’ STUDIO ON SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Maurizio Scarciglia is invited to run the FUR (Future urban Regions) studio 2016 at the Fontys Academy of Architecture and Urbanism in Tilburg, NL.
The studio will focus on investigating the urban fabric of Eindhoven, its functioning and the bases to envisage realistic scenarios of densification, compared to the consequences that each will bring to the current urban development. Students will be free to question different ways of implementation by testing solutions for the completion of existing unexploited urban clusters, as well as the development of new areas or the densification of clusters that are already developed and fully consolidated. The focus will be kept on how the city will accommodate the new inhabitants, while reducing the environmental impact of its new population, looking specifically at mobility.

One of the main worries of the Chinese megacities is the insufficient resource to feed the growing population. Local measurements range from protecting basic cultivated land to encouraging higher productive local agriculture projects, not only to ensure enough local food but also to simplify the circulation process and shorten the distance for food transportation.
As opposite to the big cities’ problems of shortage of resources for the growing population, the rural areas, where the migrants come from, encounter the opposite problems of shortage of work power for farming works. This generates abandoned farmlands and a series of connected social issues, such as unhealthy mental condition of left-behind children. On the other hand, their parents, facing soaring house price and high-level education required in the city, suffer as well the risk of unemployment in their new life. In some cases they become so-called “instability factors” in urban society.
Food becomes a driving force of planning for abundance. In these projects, NAUTA (together with partner office SADI in the Shenzhen Bao’an case) investigates two complementary ways of approaching this problem; Bottom up intervention in Beijing vs. holistic planning in Shenzhen.

在中国大城市中,资源不足以养活增长的人口以成为一个主要的忧患.
在本地的耕作方案从最基本的耕地到鼓励高产出的当地农作物不仅确保了当地足量的食物同时也简化了作业过程和缩短了运输食物的距离.
相对于大城市面对人口成长而资源短缺的问题,另一方面,在郊区由于大量的人口外移相反地正面临著缺乏耕作劳动力的问题. 这将会带来耕地荒废和一系列的社会问题,例如留守在郊区儿童的心理不健康.在另一方面,他们的父母也必须在城市中面对飞涨的房价和高层次的教育需求以及遭受失业危机等风险.甚至在一些情况中,他们将成为那些我们称在城市社会中的’不稳定的因素’.

UN Habitat Social housing and public space solutions for the Palestinian communities living in occupied territory of East Jerusalem. Maurizio Scarciglia delivered the final presentation and workshop in Ramallah.
CONSTRUCTION HOUSE BAEXEM
The construction of the extension of the house in Baexem is progressing rapidly. Four weeks ago, the contractor started with the digging of the foundations. Last week, the concrete roof of the extension was poured. The steel beams forming the main construction of the covered terrace are hoisted in place. After the secundary – wooden beam – structure of the roof is finished, the roof will be made watertight. Then, isolating and rendering the facade is the next job according to the planning. In March, the window frames will complete the exterior of the extension. When the exterior is closed, the connection between the extension and the existing house will be made.
Delivery is scheduled for the end of April.
