MAURIZIO SCARCIGLIA LEADING THE DESIGN OF THE NEW BACHELOR ‘SPATIAL PLANNING IN CLIMATE CHANGE CONTEXTS’

In the last two years Maurizio has been leading the project for the design of a new bachelor program at HZ University, Middleburgh, the Netherlands. The study program will be now implemented within the Water Management program and will be the first bachelor focused on Spatial Planning in global areas affected by climate change. The program has been developed in two years and will be open to Dutch and international students from all over the World, training professionals on how to face climate change through a design approach based on system thinking.

SHENZHEN QIANHAI ARTIFICIAL ISLAND – INVITED COMPETITION. SHENZHEN, CHINA

NAUTA, in association with VTLab London and Metrostudio Shenzhen, are finalists in invited competition for the urban and landscape design of an artificial island in the Qianhai bay of Shenzhen, China. The Shenzhen government is planning to rethink a portion of the Highway along the Pearl river delta, which will soon intersect another highway and turn into the Shenzhen-Zhuhai bridge. The intersection will be moved underwater and will become the foundation for an artificial island. We have been invited to envisage the potential for transforming this artificial island from a mere technical ventilation shaft into a landscape landmark.

NAUTA IS COMMISSIONED THE INTERIOR MAKEOVER AND EXTENSION OF A HOUSE FROM 1905 IN THE CENTRE OF UTRECHT (NL)

We have been asked to design the full interior makeover of a single family house in Utrecht and its garden extension. More info on the project page.

NAUTA WINS THIRD PRIZE IN FEZ, MOROCCO

NAUTA, IN ASSOCIATION WITH CABINET D’ ARCHITECTURE EL ALAMI, HAS WON THE THIRD PRIZE IN THE INVITED COMPETITION FOR THE FEZ-BAB JDID CARPARK.

How can we design a parking area capable to be transformed in time, adapting to the future of sustainable urban mobility? How can we dignify an important part of the urban landscape, while supplying a necessary facility to access the Medina and improve the local mobility? How can we design a car centered space, while focusing on sustainable principles that can enhance the environmental quality of the city?

Sunday, 17th of September at 4.30 p.m. (GMT +7) , Maurizio will deliver a lecture on NAUTA’s projects dealing with agriculture. We would like to kindly invite you for the discussion “GREEN ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING” after the screening of ‘PLANT THIS MOVIE’.

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session with the other panelists.

The urban planning/architectural series is going to be host in Heritage Space from the 9th to the 24th of September. There will be 3 weeks with 9 movies/documentaries and there will be a discussion on each Sunday.

 “PLANT THIS MOVIE” SYNOPSIS: Offering glimpse into the international urban farming movement, the documentary it takes a good long look at urban agriculture in a variety of global locations, including Cuba, Shanghai, Lima, Calcutta, and Addis Ababa, as well as several urban farming hotspots in the US, like New York City, LA, Portland, and New Orleans. Taking into accounts the skeptics of the concept, whose arguments are the relative inefficiencies of urban agriculture operations, the documentary narrates other aspects, such as community empowerment and local food system resiliency, aspects that are playing an important role in the future of food.

NAUTA IS COMMISSIONED THE MAX TRANSFORMER HOUSING PROTOTYPE

Nauta has been commissioned the development of a flexible housing prototype for the rising Chinese market, capable to be adapted to new family patterns. The flexible plan will allow different configurations for a unique basic type. Soon more news about this exciting project.

NAUTA IS FINALIST IN TARANTO HISTORICAL CENTER MASTERPLAN

Nauta is part of a multidisciplinary team among 18 groups selected to redesign the masterplan for the city centre of Taranto, Italy. The project asked a multidisciplinary approach for the upgrade of the existing dilapidated housing heritage, historical architecture, unsustainable mobility, social and economic stagnation and landscape and energy inefficiency.

It’s finally out!
Here is an abstract from ‘Visible and invisible Shenzhen’ by Su Wujun (2016), an amazing documentary on the birth and evolution of the metropolis, which collects interviews to many local and international colleagues engaging with Shenzhen. Here is part of the interview with Maurizio on the projects developed by NAUTA in China, with special focus on Shenzhen and its contrast between fast urbanization and local agriculture heritage.

NAUTA’S PROPOSAL FOR THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND NATURAL SCIENCES OF RABAT, MOROCCO

After three years from its launch, the Moroccan government cancelled the competition for the new Archaeology and Natural Sciences Museum of Rabat. NAUTA presents its project, developed in cooperation with El Alami (local architects), Ingeco (structures), BCD progetti (MEP), Aresingegneria (lighting systems).

The plan of the main exhibition space is articulated into two main concentric squares, separated by a thick structural ring constituted by a double concrete wall that reaches the roof. The exhibition rings offer an ideal flexibility to allow multiple layouts for different curatorial strategies. In fact, with their very simple plan, they offer three exhibition types; from the external perimeter, to the central flexible space, crossing the ‘secret’ rooms hosted in the structural layer, the visitor reaches the central grand void, dominated by the biggest attractions. The secret rooms will host special objects that can benefit of artificial light, as well as offering a more intimate and concentrated experience of the artwork. The concentric system offers every visitor the freedom to choose his favorite visit, from chronological, thematic or partial.
