International ideas competition.
PARTICIPATING PROJECT
Urban planning and landscape design for the re-use of the former airport runway tip site.
Program: Housing, Luxury housing, exhibition spaces, offices, cinema, restaurants, hotel, market, parking.
Total floor area: 90 ha.
Location: Hong Kong.
Year: 2014.

NAUTA’s master plan for the reuse of the former Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong.
Based on the existing situation and on the municipality’s plan to connect through a bridge the Kai Tak peninsula with the Kwun Tong waterfront, NAUTA’s strategy proposes to densify the bridge with the whole program required.
Having to build a bridge will anyway condition the logistics of the area. It will imply having a construction site in the middle of the water body. So why not freeing the panned site and give it back to nature?
Hong Kong, the densest World city, lacks of public space and green, packed as it is with very dense and tall buildings concentrated in such a tiny little land.

The Kai Tak masterplan is a unique opportunity to give back to HK a piece of nature. We propose to design the site destined to the required program as a tropical urban forest, while concentrating all functions in the clear and efficient bridge. All logistics are supplied by the lower levels, freeing the upper floors for simple and efficient towers. The middle platform hosts the EFL electric metro connection that will offer a sustainable connection to the line of towers. It will host as well a linear market, food court and a spectacular roof park with stunning views of the Victoria Harbor.
All roofs will provide rain water collection for internal use.
It is proved that moving functions up from the street level contributes to reduce the exposition to CO2 and SO2 produced by car traffic. Hong Kong suffers massive pollution problems. Placing the new program in the water body and lifting it up will contribute to massively enhance the health quality of the people inhabiting the structure.

The internal water body will become a flexible appendix of the forest program. Sheltered by the bridge structure it will offer a good protection for the boats during the Typhoon period, while becoming an enclosed set for events on the water, such as water sports, ‘boat-in cinema’, pop concerts.

AVETRANA- ARCH EXERCISE II

Family villa.
Avetrana, Italy, 2013
Commissioned project.
Under development

This private villa in the landscape is the second chapter of our experimentation on the ‘arch’ archetype.
While in the first project we tested the arch bi-dimensionally, here we extrude it in one direction, creating a sequence of barrel domes. The concept is based on the free adaptation of these linear volumes, in order to react to the landscape. A courtyard, the garage entrance and a swimming pool intrude the volumes, erasing the separation between interior and exterior space.

BERKEL – HOUSING FOR STARTERS

Tender competition.
Program: Two blocks of 6 affordable houses for starters.
Budget: €1.800.000
Location: Berkel en Rodenrijs, The Netherlands.
Design: 2013.

This project for a traditional Dutch row housing development focuses on the market for ‘starters’, asking for sustainable housing units with limited construction budget and affordable prices. The traditional scheme foresees private plots with house on the front and storage on the back, separated by a private garden. This scheme is obsolete, especially when destined to youngsters. Furthermore, the traditional scheme generates unfriendly circulation space on the back street, reducing it to mere logistic spaces for bikes, not exploring any possibility to improve the collective space.
Our scheme starts from this simple observation; we propose to create a ‘collective community’ for starters, by moving the storage spaces from the centre of the site to linear volumes on the perimeter. This gesture frees the centre of the site, making it ideal to host a collective multifunctional open space; a sort of condominium garden, where all inhabitants can either claim their piece of privacy or engage relationships with the neighbours: barbeques, parties or simple chill-out can take place in this flexible enclosed space.

HELSINKI – HUMAN NATURE

| CN | FR | IT | NL |

International architecture competition.
Helsinki Public Library.
Total floor area: 11.900 sqm.
Budget: N/A
Location: Helsinki, Finland.
Design: 2012.

Our proposal for the new central library of Helsinki transports the visitors into an ideal travel to rediscover the real essence of Finland: nature.
“Human Nature” brings the visitors to their original mental state. The landmark is not achieved through an architectural/formal operation but rather through the ‘transparency of the institution’, the representation of a democratic access to knowledge as natural as the forest that sur¬rounds the building.
Our project proposes to educate and entertain in the middle of the open landscape, yet in the heart of the metropolis.
We propose, besides the building itself, a new urban setting, a green urban lung that would ideally bring people into a rural context.
It is for this reason that we define our project “Human”, because humans are Nature.

ROTTERDAM – E.ON ART FOUNDATION

Feasibility study for the refurbishment of empty office spaces on top of the E.ON factory, transformed into an art foundation.
Commissioned project.
Client: E.ON
Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Year: 2011.

Situated on the Blekerstraat, close to the cultural axis of Witte de Withstraat, this energy power plant is still in use.
with exception of one office floor. E.ON is an energy production company. Its marketing program includes a biannual promotion of fine
arts and classical music. The current situation combines the main production building with a small office space. We amputate part of
this space and replace it with a new pre fabricated volume. Then, we shift this volume to west, in order to create a terrace to east. We
add autonomous stairs and an elevator and create an autonomous building on top of the existing one.
The proposal for the E.ON Art Foundation internalizes the marketing investments of the company, while adding a new cultural facility in the hart of the
city. The management of the foundation can be easily carried on by one of the several private art institutions, while remaining a flag of
the E.ON cultural involvement in the Rotterdam.

ROME – ACILIA DRAGONA AUDITORIUM

International architecture competition.
Program: 8.685 sqm auditorium and accessory spaces, parking.
Client: Municipality of Acilia.
Budget: € 4.375.000.
Location: Acilia, Rome, Italy.
Year: 2011.

Simple, intelligent and efficient are the qualities that define our proposal for the Acilia Auditorium in Rome. An almost industrial shelter that has no aim to become an icon within the public space but rather support it and become part of its structure.
The building hosts the primary functions for a small audirorium, positioning it in the very heart of the public gallery. Like a jewel in a box, the auditorium offers the best acoustic quality for every possible performance and the possibility to disapper and leave space to public events, fairs, exhibitions, parties. Thanks to the double protection offered by the service functions concentrated on the petimetre, as well as the internal double glass walls, the auditorium offers the best comfort for every performance. The walls slide vertically with a mechanical system. The same happens to the rows of seats that can assume different configurations till being allineated with the foyer level, transforming the whole structure in a ‘hangar’ kind of space, completely open and in continuity with the surrounding park. This system makes the internal spaces an extensión of the external park. The lateral ramps system gives continuity to the public space and the green even during the closing hours of the auditorium. In fact, the park is extended on the roof of the building, with an unexpected water pond that, as well as assuming a landscape role, becomes a collector of rain water, re-used for the internal toilets and the irrigation of the park.

DELHI – VASTU ACME

International architecture competition.
Mixed use.
Data: 60.000 sqm hotel, office, apartments, commercial, leisure, services.
Location: Delhi, India.
Year: 2010.

The overall composition is based on the distribution of eight slabs on the site. They are optimized in height and depth in order to host efficiently the main functions required by the master plan: housing, offices and hotel. While offering best views and orientation to all functions, we optimize their total floor ratio.
We compact the additional program into a platform that reconnects the whole structure in a rich system, capable to disclose an exciting sequence of “special spaces”.
The sustainability strategy is founded on the use of the urban floor and the elevated terrace as “public landscapes”. Covered with local species, the terrace will reduce CO2 production. A big water basin that collects rain water on the gallery roof will provide natural refreshment for the hotel rooms.
The orientation of the buildings, together with the system of deep loggias and louvres, will optimize the natural lighting of the interiors. The housing green balconies will filter the air and the light, maximizing the environmental quality of the dwellings.
