In order to be able to continue living in the house when becoming older, the clients’ brief asked for the addition of a sleeping quarter on the ground floor. To maintain an optimal visual relation with back garden, the extension is positioned on the side of the house, using the possibilities of the municipal zoning plan to its limits. The extension is connected with the garage by means of a canopy, covering the new terrace. Between the covered space and the existing house, an intimate patio is created, to let the sunlight flow into the living spaces unobstructed, while contributing to create different green atmospheres in the garden. Plenty of sunlight is added to the original living cluster by adding a generous skylight on the junction between new and old volumes. The materials used in the extension create a discrete dialog with the existing, while declaring with details and geometry their contemporary nature.

Since 2011, NAUTA is working on a project for a Business Park in Zhuzhou, China, currently under construction. Parallel to that, NAUTA is working with international comparison on a research project that studies the principles of sustainable planning for the future of the “Business Park”, a typology that is spreading in China, the success of which is too often compromised by radical mono-function­alism and traditional zoning. By comparing examples of International Business Parks, NAUTA demonstrates how planning multifunc­tional districts applying vertical zoning facilitates their long term success, yet helps the natural process of their absorption in the city.
This method of planning implies a constant dialogue between government, planning institutes, with the private investors involved in the actual construction of the city. We believe that good urban design does not necessarily cost to deliver, yet it offers strong competitive advantages; it needs to be spread to those operating across all sectors of the market.
In this process, occupiers nee to be persuaded of the advantages of urban design, since their attitude influences the actions of developers and investors.

本项目主要研究今后商务园区的可持续发展规划理念。商务园区是当前在中国普遍可见的项目类型,其规划设计常常落入传统区划与单一功能的窘境。通过比较全球范围内商务园区的案例,对于入驻的企业NAUTA展示了复合功能商务园区的规划理念,这将有益于他们的可持续经营,并帮助他们融入城市发展过程中。

开放空间
在欧洲我们鼓励集中建设来减少私有开放空间,为公众提供更多可亲近的绿色空间. 集中公共服务空间及停车空间也能达到这样的目的。在美国促进利用现有绿色用地开发更多的公共空间有助于大面积绿地的利用,避免单纯的大面积纯自然景观。中国的商务园应当从正确的尺度入手解决公共空间的问题。进一步合理分布商务园区的物业应当首先考虑公共空间的分布,其次是办公共空间,并考虑在公共空间中引入更多休闲娱乐功能。

停车设施
集中停车场仍然是最有效的解决方式,因此停车设施应当集中安排,并在需要的时候尽可能建设地下停车场。在过去几年我们的实践经验也告诉我们,集中式停车库并结合多功能开发设计能够有效减少辅助设施对于环境的影响。无论如何,大面积独立私有的停车空间都应当被取消。

绿地空间
绿地空间需要多样化的设计,无论是在中国还是在欧洲和美国。尽管分析案例中绿地尺度都各不相同,但是问题都出在仅仅将私有绿地转变成大面积的公共绿地,仅仅拥有其象征性的功能。公共空间与绿地应当尝试不同类型的设计,从国家公园到城市公园,到绿地广场,到林荫大道,半公共花园,街头小花园等等。

Master plan for the distribution of new info stations in the city centre of Shenzhen
Program: analysis of the human flow and commercial behaviour of shoppers. Qualification and distribution of new digital info points based on China mobile data.

In the 1st phase we suggest to choose three most populated commercial areas respectively located in Nanshan, Futian and Luohu districts.

Mixc city as one of the most successful commercial complex generates a great lively atmosphere reaching Kingkey 100 to the north and Renming nan commercial center to the east. Based on the commercial activity scope, we suggest spreading the info station along Jiabin Rd. Shennan Avenue and Buji River, serving surrounded commercial area.

Futian shopping park is a mega commercial area connecting Futian CBD and Futian railway station, major commercial activities occur around big shopping centers and exhibition area. Based on commercial activity, we suggest distributing info stations along Fuhua Rd. to connect commercial spots, offices and high-speed railway station.

Coastal city in Nanshan district as a new built commercial center and most important service area in west Shenzhen, generates commercial activities reaching as far as west of Haiya stores and Shenzhen bay stadium to the East. Based on commercial scope we suggest distributing info station linearly along commercial facilities, and setting up more in Houhai center which is under construction.

In first phase there would be around 250 to 300 info station to be put in use. The proposed area to distribute info stations in the future could be tourist-concentrated OCT area, East gate commercial area, Baoan center and airport area, etc.

福田购物园是一个大型商业区连接福田商务中心区和福田火车站,主要的商业活动是在大型购物中心和展览区周边。根据商业活动行为,我们建议将数码信息站沿着福华路设置,以连接商业点、办公室和高速铁路车站。

南山区的海岸城作为一个在深圳西边新兴的商业中心和最重要的商业服务区,带动的商业活动直抵海雅和深圳湾体育中心的西边地区。根据商业活动范围,我们建议数码信息站应线性延著商业设施设立,特别在后海中心多设置一些。

In Beijing an unstoppable de¬crees of the actual arable land in south and east of the city, areas currently used as arable land and rapidly under urban¬ization because of the develop¬ment trajectory that connects Beijing with Tianjin.
To dealing with the increasing amount of migrants in big cit¬ies, the national government issued policy on small-middle sized town urbanization and development in western Chi¬na to balance the big migrants burden over costal area, while local governments like Shang¬hai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, claimed the indus¬try upgrading policy, intend¬ing to avoid the arrival of low-educated migrants in favor of high-end educated human resource. If we refer to the an¬nual demography report of these cities, there is still a no¬table increase on migrants and the average education level of these migrants is still below the average level of registered citizens.
Measurement ranged from protecting basic cultivated land to encouraging higher productive local agriculture projects, not only to ensure enough local food, but also to simplify the circulation pro¬cess and shorten the distance for food transportation, thus reducing pollution.

In the urban area of Beijing, within the 6th ring, we propose a process of agricultural completion of the urban voids. The urban structure of Beijing is well known worldwide for its humongous scale. Urban blocks, infrastructure and neighborhoods create a ‘giga city’, where everything is oversized, especially when compared to the historical city. In this context we have found large portions of ‘left over’ green, especially the one close to infrastructural nodes and fly-over, which for their size can easily be transformed into agricultural banks.
By mapping those areas we realized the size of this rescued land and its capability to become a food reserve for thousands inhabitants. These voids are used mostly as decorative green without any use and, most of all, they do not offer any social use because of their lack of accessibility.
We collected more than 70 cases with different dimensions, amounting all together to more than 6 millions sqm.

2014北京设计周 Nauta architecture & research 专访总监建筑师 MAURIZIO

NAUTA正在发掘中国城市基本干预措施对农业集约化的城市景观的潜力。我们相信, 通过完成城市空间或规划新的广泛的领域,城市设计可以提供美丽的社会领域以及为人口不断增长的中国提供额外的食物银行。为了测试北京荒地重新使用的可能性,NAUTA开始与天津天友集团的顾问合作。
快速都市化让天津和北京将结合成一个更大的都会区,因此城郊的耕地面临剧烈都市化压力,北京南部和东部的郊区的实际耕地总面积正剧烈下降,为了解决三线以上的城市大量增加移民人口的问题,中央政府颁布中小型城鎭城市化政策以及西部都市化发展以分担沿海城市大量的移民压力。而地方政府如上海,北京,广州和深圳,则主张产业升级政策,以避免低学历的移民过度消耗高端教育资源。
观察这些城市的年度统计报告将发现,低教育水平的移民族群数量有一个显着的增加,这些移民的平均教育水平仍然低于注册公民。估计从保护基本农田和鼓励高生产当量的农业发展项目,不仅要保证充分供给当地食物,也简化了物流过程,缩短食品运输的距离,从而减少污染。

通过在地图上标记绘制这些地点,我们才理解这些城市的”空隙”实际面积之大,有潜力解放目前闲置使用的困境甚至提供数千居民粮食的储备能力。这些空地通常只是无生产功能的装饰性绿地,最重要的是,这些绿地不具有任何社交功能,因为它们根本无法徒步抵达缺乏可及性。

SHENZHEN – BAO’AN WEST COASTAL ZONE

FINALIST
Concept Proposal for International Consultation on the Conceptual Urban Design of Bao’an West Dynamic Coastal Zone.
Program: public buildings, commercial, housing, mixed use, tourism, urban agriculture.
Total site area: 1.600ha.
Location: Shenzhen, China.
Year: 2014.

This project consists of the plan for the Shenzhen coast towards the Pearl river Delta, the only waterfront left in Shenzhen for re-qualification, pivot for the entire Pearl River Delta region. The project area consists on 45km coastline with a total of 1600 ha, including harbor areas, two existing villages and a brand new town that will host 3.5 million inhabitants.

NAUTA’s strategy focuses on landscape interventions that would solve the massive water pollution that affects the 33 tributary rivers, as well as the Pearl River. NAUTA’s strategy combines a short term intervention based on the intensification of the local mangrove forests, local protected landscape heritage, in order to maximize the water filtering, as well as a long term hydraulic intervention that could eliminate the causes of water pollution for good.

Our ‘Productive Landscape’ becomes the application of our latest research principles that try to design nature and city, maximizing their productivity. The Chinese national 2015 plan stresses the problem of the dramatic decrease of arable land in the country, vs. an unstoppable population growth in the urban areas.
How can the new Chinese megalopolis provide food for their inhabitants?

The project for the Bao’an region proposes a total 63.4% green surface, from which 21.2% will be agriculture land. This means that we add 8.5 millions sqm of new agriculture land in Shenzhen, making agriculture the focus point of the newly designed public space and sustainable employment. All related business activities will aim to make Shenzhen an International leader into new bio and agro technologies, bringing on site the latest innovations is Aguaponic, Hydroponic and vertical farming.
Bao’ an becomes the center for the re-birth of a new sustainable business for Shenzhen city, contributing to add to its already thick program for leading in this field, while diversifying program and urban environment.

ESTREES-MONS – PLACE DE LA MAIRIE

Master plan for the reorganization of the public space of the centre of the village and landscape design of the square in front of the Municipal Building.
Total floor area: 8.165 sqm masterplan, 1.550 sqm square.
Location: Estrées-Mons, France.
Design: 2013.

The renovation of the Municipality Square, necessary to fulfill the law requisites for disables accessibility by 2015, becomes the opportunity to reorganize the whole ‘core du village’, currently suffering the complete absence of an organic scheme. The space is characterized by the fast extra urban axis that brutally cuts the Municipal Square from the rest of the public space. The design needs to start from this condition to blend this institutional space with the south development, more accessible and domestic.

The square, free from its current fences, becomes active part of the village, completely accessible during the day. It is thought as a public garden, matching the agricultural vocation of the area, integrating facilities such as the bus stop and the existing monument. Every existing tree is integrated in the new design that unfolds around them by adding a uniquegesture; a white concrete platform alternatively becomes catwalk, bench, flower bed, without adding any unnecessary feature, yet matching the limited budget for construction.

BIELLA – WOOL CITY

International urban planning competition.

Urban strategy for the re-use of a former hospital site with monumental buildings.
Program: Textile Museum, Textile Innovation Center, incubator, housing for starters, retail, offices, hotel with wellnesscenter and congressfacilities, parking garage and landscape design.
Total floor area: 35.000 sqm.
Location: Biella, Italy.
Year: 2013.

The brief asked for a complete re-thinking of the former structure of the hospital, currently relocated in the outskirts of the city. The total floor area includes 35.000 sqm of vacant space. The heterogeneous and chaotic complex includes some prestigious buildings from the forties and a massive slab from the sixties with a very high landscape potential.
NAUTA’s proposal extends the existing social pattern of the small city by adding students, researchers, entrepreneur starters, tourists, workers and boosts the economical power of the province, historical leader in the Italian textile market. Biella plays as well a pivot role in the tourism of the region, being close to the Alps and several skiing locations.
NAUTA’s strategy transforms the hospital into a new pole of excellence for International textile trading and research, students accommodation, incubator for textile and fashion entrepreneurs and a new hotel-wellness center, capable to complete the offer for the new international market, yet promote the local beauties and traditions.

SELECTED PROJECTS

AVETRANA – ARCH EXERCISE I

Program: Complete renovation of a two-family house, including garden design.

Location: Avetrana (Taranto), Italy.
Design and realisation: 2009-2013.

This two-family house presents a traditional local scheme of ‘row house’; introvert on the street and open on the back garden. The central rooms, living and dining areas, suffered great lack of light, due to their distance from the two facades. All rooms on the ground floor present vaulted masonry ceilings, very valuable for their architecture and space effect.
The scheme imposes the preservation of the enfilade of vaulted spaces, yet it urges a strategy to avoid the box in box effect and extend multiple
internal flows and views. In order to achieve this effect of openness and space interconnection, we used the ‘arch’ archetype and applied it in a playful unconventional way. We opened several arches, different in size, either as ‘internal windows’ or to merge entire rooms into each other. The final effect contributes to lighten the masonry structure, offering many interconnected perspectives that ultimately make the spaces breath, lightened by lots of natural light. The masonry becomes lighter, like paper, cut by generous voids.
We reduced the palette of materials to very few ones: masonry and stucco for the walls; ‘coccio pesto’ for the floors, a local mix of hydraulic mortar and terracotta grit, poured on site; travertine for the other surfaces. Travertine is applied either inits natural state, or treated with a transparent resin, capable to preserve the visual irregularity of the stone. The final effect wills to recreate a sort of ‘rustic , thrifty, somehow austere’ atmosphere, achieved by using innovative applications for traditional materials.

WUXI – ARTS SCHOOL CAMPUS

Program: Five school buildings for cultural and arts studies, experimental theatre, cultural centre, offices, student housing and cultural facilities.

The design of the schools district and the related public space starts from the reinterpretation of the traditional courtyard house. The 4 sides of the house are exploded, becoming each one an autonomous building. They transform the traditional private courtyard into a collective semi-private space, reserved to the students’ activities. The 4 school buildings are as well supplied with intenal courtyards, bringing the urban concept back to its traditional architectural scale.
Sustainability in a fast urbanization calls for simplicity, sobriety, pragmatism, elegance. The most efficient way to emerge in a screaming parade is silence. The project locates in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, Changjiang River Delta. Wuxi is strategically located in an area equally distant 100 km from Shanghai, Huangzhou and Suzhou. This offers the city a leading role in the regional development. The Wuxi Art School campus is located in the majour Outang University campus. The total site area amounts to approximately 7.3 ha, developing linearly in direction NW-SE.
This project has the ambition to explore a sustainable model to develop a educational campus, which could guarantee a long-term payback for the investors in terms of economy, social and environmental development.

该项目的学校区及相关公共空间的设计始于对传统四合院的重新诠释。房子从四个方向分开,成为四个建筑单体。设计将传统的私人庭院转变成了集体的半私密空间,用于学生活动。 四个单体校舍以及用内置式庭院,使得现代都市重新回到了传统建筑观念的尺度。

“可持续性”在快速城市化的环境中意味着“简约,清爽,务实,优雅”。正如在喧闹的游行中最有效的凸显方式就是保持安静。

本项目位于江苏省无锡市,一个距离上海,杭州,南京均有约100多公里的城市,这使得无锡在区域发展中显得出类拔萃。无锡文化艺术学校位于藕塘职教文化园区内,总占地面积约7.3公顷,基地为东南-西北方向条形。

本方案尝试探索在教育型校园中使用“可持续”的模型,以保证投资获得长期的社会经济及环境发展的效益。
